Can Thieves Use Remote Starters to Steal Cars?

3:16 am Autos

There are all kinds of urban legends circulating about car thieves using remote starters for automobile theft.  That’s just what they are–urban legends.  Modern remote car starter units use a rolling code feature that generates a new radiofrequency code sequence every time you start up or turn off your car using the button on your key fob.  This has been the industry standard for keyless entry and remote starters since the mid 1990s.  If you’re worried about car theft, focus on parking your car in a safe place and removing or hiding things you’re worried about losing.  Code grabbing hasn’t been an effective way to steal a car in over ten years.
